Smoking Haram-Why?

The declaration that “There is no God Worthy of being worshipped except Allah & that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”, demands that the Muslim accepts the Decrees set by Allah and by His Messenger-Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)

Islam is a Revelation from Allah with a complete code of life. It tells what is good and what is evil: Allah says in the Holy Quran: And We have shown him (man) the two ways (good and evil). (Quran 90/10)

He allows them all that is good and lawful, and prohibits them as unlawful all that is evil (things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, drinks, etc.). (Quran 7/157)

So, is smoking (cigarettes, pipes, etc.) evil or not? Let us examine its effects:
* Smoking is a killer: causes lung-cancer, lung-tuberculosis and heart diseases.
Allah says: And do not kill yourselves. (Quran 4/29)
He also says: And do not throw yourselves into destruction. (Quran 2/195)

These verses are sufficient to make smoking Haram.
* Smoking is a wasting of wealth. Allah says: …But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift, Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the devils, and the Devil (Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Quran 17/26-27)

* The smoker is unjust to himself as well as his family by burning away his money and his chest!
* The smoker not only causes harm to himself, he/she also inflicts harms upon others around him/her.
The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Saheeh Al-Jami 7517)
* The smokers cause the spread of evil; they smoke openly and thus encourage others to do the same.
* The smokers dislike fasting and praying because they become impatient. They want to go for the next “round”.    The smoker becomes like an edict.
* The smoker smells bad! His car, home, clothes etc. carry the bad smell too.

From the above, it is clear that smoking is evil and thus it is Haram (unlawful).
If you are under any kind of stress, then turn to Allah, read the Holy Quran, and be with non-smokers. Seek Allah’s help and don’t be enslaved to something that burns you and your money.

تفسیر ابنِ کثیر۔۔ جلد ۳۔ص ۴۹۲

حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے ایک مرتبہ نبی کریم ﷺ سے کہا:۔ یارسول اللہ ﷺ جب میں آپ ﷺ کو دیکھتا ہوں تو میرا جی خوش ہوجاتا ہے۔ اور میری آنکھیں ٹھنڈی ہوجاتی ہیں۔۔ آپ ﷺ ہمیں تمام چیزوں کی اصلیت سے خبردار کریں۔
آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا:۔ ابوہریرہ! تمام چیزیں پانی سے پیدا کی گئی ہیں۔۔ پھر میں نے کہا:۔ یارسول اللہ ﷺ۔۔ مجھے کوئی ایسا عمل بتادیجئے۔ جس سے میں جنت میں داخل ہوجاؤں۔۔
آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا:۔ ”۱۔ لوگوں کو سلام کیا کرو۔۔ ۲۔ کھانا کھلایا کرو۔۔ ۳۔ صلہ رحمی کرتے رہو۔۔ ۴۔ اور رات کو جب لوگ سوئے ہوئے ہوں تم تجد کی نماز پڑھا کرو تاکہ سلامتی کے ساتھ جنت میں داخل ہوجاؤ۔۔۔“۔

It has been narrated on the authority of Sulayman ibn Yasar who said: People dispersed around Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه and Naatil, who was from the Syrians, said to him: O Sheikh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from the ...Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم. He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say:

“The first man, (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment, will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allaah will make him recount His blessings (i.e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life). (Then) will Allaah say: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I fought for You until I died as a martyr. Allaah will say: You have told a lie. You fought so that you might be called a "brave warrior". And you were called so. (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell.

Then there will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur’aan. He will be brought, Allaah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Then will Allaah ask: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur’aan, seeking Your pleasure. Allaah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called "a scholar", and you recited the Qur’aan so that it might be said: "He is a Qaari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire.

Then will be brought a man whom Allaah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought, Allaah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allaah will (then) ask: What have you done (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which You wished that it should be spent. Allaah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (you): "He is a generous fellow", and so it was said. Then will Allaah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell.”

Abu Huraira (ALLAH be pleased with him) reported ALLAH's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When a man dies, his acts come to an end, except three: an ongoing charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious offspring, who prays for him
